Green Roofing
Green roofing is the next frontier of commercial roofing. Are you looking for roofing services for your commercial building in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx, or the surrounding areas? Z. Abedin Construction repairs, replaces, and installs commercial roofs in the New York area, and we’d be happy to help you with yours.
There’s no question that the roof is one of the most important components of a commercial building. It protects your building from bad weather, extreme temperatures, and even rodent and pest infestations. Finding a local commercial roofing company that understands the environmental and regulatory concerns in the area will help you to keep your commercial real estate in top condition.
Z. Abedin Construction offers the following commercial roofing services.
Initial Expense
A green roof needs some upfront investment. The initial expense of installing this type of roof prevents many homeowners from pursuing this option. In order to successfully prepare a building for a green roof, there needs to be extensive design work and a careful structural analysis. Green roofs can be quite heavy, and some buildings are not designed to bear the load.
Once the initial costs are incurred, however, many homeowners find that their green roofs save them money in energy costs. According to a study in Canada, a six-inch extensive green roof can reduce summer energy costs by 75 percent.
Design
A green roof is easiest to install and maintain on flat or low-sloping roofs. Steeper roofs may require the installation of a reinforcing system like a tray planting or terracing system. This is necessary to keep the soil in place.
In order to keep the building dry and secure, a multi-layered waterproof barrier must be installed between the soil and the roof decking. Plywood is a common material used in the waterproof barrier portion of the roof. While keeping water out of the rest of the building, this barrier also prevents roots from reaching into the decking.
Installation
Not only does a green roof need a well-designed, multi-layered waterproof barrier, but it also needs a drainage mat with capillary spaces on top of the insulation. Installers will also frame the sides of the roof with mesh gutter guards and sturdy vertical edging. Once the structure is completed, the soil will be added and plants will be strategically placed in pre-planned areas on the green roof.
